is the name of one of the eastern
Siouan tribes, related to the
Tutelo,
Occaneechi,
Monacan,
Saponi and other eastern
Siouan peoples, whose ancestral homeland is in
Virginia. The Manahoac tribe was found in and around Orange county, Virginia until they merged with the Saponi tribe. Mahenips Band of the Saponi Nation is found in the remote Ozark hills of Missouri, Arkansas and in parts of Oklahoma and Texas with the tribal headquarters in West Plains Missouri. In addition there is the Saponi Descendents Association based in Texas, Saponi Nation of Ohio, and there are other survivors in the
United States and
Canada who are of Saponi ancestry, including the old Carmel Community, Magoffin County, KY Salyerville Indians and many who claim Saponi ancestry via
Melungeon lines.

Currently the only surnames which are proven to have been Saponi or listed with the Saponi tribe are as follows; Collins, Austin, Bolling, and Harrison. Others have said they are Saponi descendants however no real proof has ever been found, it should also be noted that many people with other surnames and recently began claiming Saponi has been found to have came from areas outside of the Saponi areas. The last Saponi/Manahoac chief was Vardy Collins of Newman's ridge.
